Introduction

These charts show year-on-year (annual) percentage changes of New Zealand quarterly price indexes published by StatsNZ. Changes in price indexes reflect changes in weighted average prices of various different bundles of goods and services. The weights used to calculate the averages reflect consumption or expenditure patterns across individual goods and services within each bundle.

The percentage changes in the charts below show the change in each price index over a year. This is the percentage change in each index compared to its value in the same quarter in the previous year.

The charts can be used to see how quickly each price index is increasing or decreasing over time, and to compare rates of increase or decrease across price indexes. With price indexes, it is not possible to compare levels of prices across indexes, i.e. it is not possible to see which goods and services are relatively more expensive or cheaper compared to others.

Consumer goods & services

These price indexes reflect changes in weighted averages prices of common types of consumer goods. The weights are based on typical consumer spending patterns. The individual indexes shown below are what are used to calculate the overall rate of consumer price index (CPI) inflation.
